What is Yoga?
Yoga means "union" or "to yoke" in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit.  Yoga creates union between the mind, body, and spirit.

What will Yoga do for me?
On a physical level, Yoga both strengthens the body and gives the body suppleness.  This is very important!  An object which is very strong, yet is rigid will crack under pressure - as will humans!  And an object which is very flexible, but without any structure will be like a floppy ragdoll unable to move forward with resilience - as too with humans!

Yoga creates this balance within the body on a muscular/structural level.  Yoga also works much more deeply creating internal balance of our energetic systems, and aiding in the development of a balance of strength and flexibility mentally and emotionally as well.

Yoga in this sense is really a "one stop shop"!

Am I too young/old, big/small, stiff/weak for Yoga?
Easy answer - most certainly, no!!  There are many, many forms of yoga, and many, many reasons why individuals want to learn yoga.  No matter what level of previous experience you have, what your reason for exploring yoga, what age/physical condition you are, you can be certain that there is a yoga for you.

It is my firm belief that yoga is a fantastic tool which can be used for growth and change on many levels.  The right yoga for you is the one that supports and gives you greater strength, flexibility, and balance to pursue your goals whether they be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or any combination thereof.

Is yoga a religion?
No.  Yoga is a system for discovering more about ourselves.  This is one of the many things that is fantastic about yoga - yoga allows you to search, explore, discover, and implement change on whatever level you want - be it physical, mental or emotional, or spiritual.
While yoga is not a religion, it is harmonious with all of the worlds major belief systems.  Yoga holds basic tenets such as ahimsa (non-violence), which are many times associated with Buddhist or Jain ideologies, but yoga is most certainly compatible with both western and eastern doctrines.  The philosophical side of yoga is there for you to explore if you wish or not if you don't wish.
In terms of the classes which I am offering, the classes are essentially physical postures, breathing techniques and relaxation.  I may sometimes offer information which I think is relevant to our daily modern lives on Food, De-Stressing, Balance, Releasing Anger, Living in the Present, etc all of which have answers which stem from ancient yogic texts.  While I find this very interesting, I understand completely if this is not everyone's cup of tea - if you don't want it, tell me and I will leave these snippets out of my class plans.  Hope to see you in class soon!
